APCO Worldwide’s Dr. Joshua Walker Selected as a 2016 Presidential Leadership Scholar

Washington, D.C. (Feb. 16, 2016) – Dr. Joshua Walker, vice president of global programs at APCO Worldwide, was named to the 2016 class of Presidential Leadership Scholars, a joint program between four presidential centers.

“I’m incredibly honored and humbled to be selected as a Presidential Leadership Scholar given the caliber of my colleagues and the transformative experience I know this will be for all of us,” said Dr. Walker. “My global work at APCO has prepared me to take full advantage of this incredible learning opportunity and I’m excited to participate in such an intensive program led by former presidents and the centers that focus on the leadership lessons we all can engage with as we seek to take our leadership to the next level.”

This highly selective leadership development initiative is designed to aide emerging leaders through the study and practice of differing approaches to leadership, expansion of peer networks and access to key mentors. With approximately 100 hours of informative sessions and case studies, scholars learn from the knowledge of recent presidents. Sessions include strategic partnerships; vision and communication; decision making; and influence and persuasion. Resources are drawn from the presidential centers of Lyndon B. Johnson, George H.W. Bush, William J. Clinton and George W. Bush. Scholars were selected based on their leadership growth potential and desire to give back to their communities and ultimately, their country.

“The inclusion of Joshua into the class of 2016 speaks volumes to his role as a developing leader both at APCO and beyond,” said Margery Kraus, founder and executive chairman of APCO Worldwide. “I am proud of the culture at APCO and its strong legacy of developing the next generation of leaders in business, government, academia and the nonprofit arenas. Joshua’s role in the Presidential Leadership Scholars program is yet another example of the caliber of the team at APCO and his involvement will continue that tradition.”

Dr. Walker specializes in business diplomacy, international affairs and public-private partnerships. Prior to his time at APCO, he was an international affairs fellow with the Council on Foreign Relations, acting as a senior adviser to numerous officials in U.S. federal departments and agencies; he served at the U.S. Department of State in Secretary Kerry’s office of the chief economist and previously served in Secretary Clinton’s Global Partnership Initiative as the senior adviser on the Middle East and North Africa; he worked for the U.S. Embassy Ankara, Turkey Desk at the State Department and the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon.

In addition to his work at APCO, Dr. Walker is a transatlantic fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, responsible for its Turkey program and Japan portfolio of the Asia team; he also teaches the US Politics of National Security at George Washington's Elliott Graduate School of International Affairs.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Richmond, a master’s degree in international relations from Yale University and a Ph.D. in politics and public policy from Princeton University.
