Former Economist Group Journalist Joins APCOBrussels (April 3, 2008) – Emily Smith joined APCO Worldwide as senior associate in the Brussels office, Garry Walsh, managing director, announced today. Previously a reporter for the Economist Group’s European Voice newspaper, Smith brings several years of media experience to APCO’s strategic communication team in Brussels. “I am delighted to welcome Emily to the company,” said Walsh. “Her outstanding experience as a journalist with one of Europe’s most respected publications will prove tremendously valuable to our clients in Europe and beyond.” Before joining the Voice in 2005, Smith worked for media outlets including ENDS Europe Daily, The Parliament Magazine, EUPolitix.com and TV Brussel, as well as for the European Commission press department. Her areas of media expertise include health, energy, research, agriculture, consumer affairs and the environment. During her time with the Economist Group, she managed a series of special reports on policy areas of corporate concern. “Businesses and industry are increasingly aware of the importance of good communication strategies,” said Smith. “Whilst working as a journalist I was impressed with APCO’s professional approach to media relations, and am very pleased to be joining the team.” A British national, Smith moved to Brussels after time spent living in Paris, New York and Venice. She is a graduate of the University of Cambridge and of New York University, after winning scholarships at both institutions. During her time as a journalist she was a regular speaker and moderator at European Union policy conferences.
