Sergio Marchi

Sergio Marchi, co-chair of APCO Worldwide’s International Advisory Council, brings extensive expertise in policy development and implementation, particularly in the area of international trade and development. Ambassador Marchi provides clients with top-level strategic counsel regarding trade; intellectual property; and global political, business and regulatory issues.

Ambassador Marchi enjoyed a distinguished political and diplomatic career. First elected as a Toronto city councillor in 1982, he later moved into the House of Commons as a member of parliament in 1984, where he represented the Toronto riding of York West for 15 years. In government, Ambassador Marchi served as minister for three different portfolios: citizenship and immigration, environment, and international trade. In August 1999, the prime minister appointed him Canadian ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and United Nations Agencies in Geneva, where he served for five years. He quickly established his leadership credentials by assuming a number of important posts, including his election as chairman of the WTO General Council by the 148 countries.

Ambassador Marchi was a senior business advisor with the Canadian law firm of Lang Michener and president of the Canada-China Business Council. Currently, he is based in Geneva, where he is advisor to the chairman of a family holding company. He serves as a director on several company boards and as a member of several nonprofit boards, including the Advisory Council of the Schulich School of Business at York University. He is also an adjunct professor at the U.S. Webster University in Geneva and the Geneva School of Diplomacy and International Relations.
