Veteran Wall Street Journal Reporter Joins APCO Europe
Washington, D.C. (July 20, 2004) - Brandon Mitchener, a leading European Union (E.U.) correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, is joining APCO Worldwide in September as a director in the Brussels office.
"As a journalist, I've always appreciated APCO's professionalism and am confident we'll be able to teach each other a thing or two. I also expect we'll have fun doing it," Mitchener said.
Mitchener has worked with the Wall Street Journal in Europe for almost a decade, most recently as the Brussels correspondent responsible for E.U. politics and business affairs, with a particular focus on competition policy, business regulation and the E.U. constitution.
"Brandon is a very well-respected and prominent journalist among the Brussels press corps. He will take a leading role in our media practice, adding greatly to our experienced multi-country media team," said Ivo Ilic Gabara, managing director of European media relations.
"Brandon will add significant strength to our competition practice and participate in broader corporate and government client assignments," said Brad Staples, chairman of APCO Europe. "We have watched Brandon in action from the other side of the fence and have always regarded him highly. I am delighted that he is coming on board at such an exciting time in our company's development."
Mitchener has covered antitrust decisions ranging from the WorldCom and Sprint, HP and Compaq, AOL and Time Warner, and GE and Honeywell mergers to the landmark Microsoft case. He has also covered new European rules governing automobile distribution, spam, copyright protection and food safety, including biotech foods. Mitchener has also reported on the increasing importance of the European Parliament and non-government organizations in shaping E.U. policies. He has repeatedly sought to raise awareness that Brussels is driving more new rules that impact global business.
Prior to his position in Brussels, Mitchener was the Wall Street Journal's European automotive correspondent based in Frankfurt. He has accumulated 15 years experience in journalism, having reported for the International Herald Tribune and Dow Jones News Services as the Germany and foreign correspondent respectively.
Mitchener has served as U.S. media representative on the advisory council of the International Press Association and was co-founder and president of the International Business Journalists Forum of Frankfurt. He is originally from Indiana, and was educated at Wabash College in Indiana, the universities of Vienna and Basel, and Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism in New York.
