Former CMS Capital Markets Advisor Bolsters APCO’s Health Advisory Board
Washington, D.C. (July 9, 2012) – Lambert van der Walde, former capital markets advisor to the administrator of the Centers of Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) during both the Bush and Obama administrations, joins APCO's Health Advisory Board, Robert Schooling, global chair of APCO’s health care practice, announced today.
“Lambert brings a deep understanding and an inside view of the health care sector at a pivotal time for that industry,” said Schooling. “We are thrilled to welcome him to our strong team and know he will be a tremendous resource to our clients.”
During his tenure at CMS, van der Walde served as the agency’s liaison between policy-makers, investors and the health care industry. He directed the agency’s capital markets efforts and advised CMS administrators as well as U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, White House and congressional officials of market consequences of new and proposed regulatory and legislative actions. He also briefed these colleagues on health care industry market performance, access to capital and financial outlook.
“It is a crucial time for health care in this country, and understanding the working relationships between public and private sectors is more important than ever,” said van der Walde. “I am very excited to bring my knowledge to APCO’s Health Advisory Board and offer clients strategic counsel that may help them maneuver and grow in this increasingly complex field.”
Prior to serving the Bush and Obama administrations, van der Walde was an investment banker with Salomon Brothers, where he focused on equity and debt underwriting as well as merger and acquisition advisory services. He has also worked in venture capital financing and as a fixed income portfolio analyst. He currently is president of VAN DER WALDE & CO., a health care finance and policy advisory firm. He advises health care industry leaders and entrepreneurs, as well as public and private investors and lenders, as they design strategies to deploy capital and other resources across all sectors of health care.
APCO’s Health Advisory Board is a specialty group of the International Advisory Council that comprises former chief medical officers, public health leaders, heads of communication of large pharmaceutical and insurance companies, and former health policy officials.
van der Walde joins many other health care and health policy experts at APCO, including Bob Kocher, M.D., former special assistant to President Obama on health care and economic policy and former member of the National Economic Council; Leslie Norwalk, former acting administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services; Kavita Patel, former health policy advisor to the Obama administration; Phyllis Piano, former head of communications for GE’s medical business and former vice president of corporate communications and philanthropy at Amgen; Wayne Pines, former chief spokesman and chief of consumer education and information for the U.S. Food & Drug Administration; Kenneth Thorpe, former deputy assistant secretary at HHS; Mike Tuffin, former executive vice president at America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP); and Richard Wade, former senior executive at the American Hospital Association.
