APCO was able to turn this event into a meaningful project for all the tenants, supporting organizations and students involved, while focusing on our original objectives. The Cyberport Tenants Club will continue in the spirit of grooming future IT talents in Hong Kong.

— Dr. Winnie Tang, Chairman, The Cyberport Tenants Club

Hong Kong Cyberport

The Challenge

The growing number of tenants settling into Hong Kong’s flagship information technology district, Cyberport, created a natural synergy for development of an IT community. To raise the profile of Hong Kong’s IT industry in the region, tenants formed the Cyberport Tenants Club (CTC). As their first task, the CTC decided to revamp Cyberport’s Web site. APCO was asked to organize a design competition to develop a professional quality corporate Web site.

The Solution

Rather than limiting the competition to Web site design professionals, APCO advised the CTC to structure the project around community development by engaging the youth of Hong Kong. Under the tagline “Grooming Hong Kong’s Future IT Talents,” the Web site design competition included all tertiary institutions and high school students interested in learning about Web design. In addition, APCO designed a step-by-step curriculum and an accompanying tutorial session for contestants. Tenants contributed by volunteering resources, acting as coaches, and participating in judging panels. Select tenants offered summer internships as awards.

The Result

Over 400 students and teachers participated in the competition. The winning design became a turnkey solution for Cyberport’s Web site revamp project. APCO’s approach to the challenge enabled contribution from all tenants through volunteerism, and developed a platform for communication between Cyberport and their tenants. The IT and education industries applauded Cyberport’s efforts in community development. As a result, The Hong Kong Industry Professional Association invited Cyberport to host the award ceremony of the competition at the prestigious 2003 Global ICT Summit, where 400 ICT experts and guests from government, media and business from over 20 countries attended.
