Web Developer - Front End

APCO Worldwide, a global integrated communication consulting firm headquartered in Washington, DC, is seeking a mid-level, front end Web Developer to work on a breadth of web based tools and sites within a fast-paced agency environment. You'll work alongside our online production team which includes designers, information architects, content developers to support our client project teams and digital strategists in creating cutting-edge interactive solutions for APCO's clients such as websites, web based applications, mobile applications and interactive online tools.
Responsibilities for this position include developing new and supporting existing front-end XHTML templates, as well as building new and customizing existing PHP templates for high-traffic, industry-leading, online media websites. You'll also code, test and document cross-browser compatible XHTML templates and assets, and assist integration into Drupal installations, focusing on internal best practices and web standards; code, test and document Drupal and Wordpress templates; cCode, test and document site Javascript functionality using standard libraries like jQuery, as well as shared company libraries and third-party plugins.
To qualify, you will have prior experience in all aspects of web programming with a passion for accessibility, performance, elegance, and cross-browser compatibility (yes, even IE6). You should also possess a strong knowledge of up-to-date web design and web standards including: separation of content from presentation using CSS/text-based layouts; cross-browser compatibility techniques; unobtrusive Javascript, DOM-manipulation and DHTML scripting techniques; and SEO strategies and accessibility.
Top candidates will also have strong competencies in and recent hands-on experience with page development using XHTML 1.1, HTML5, and CSS, deep understanding of the box model, strict/quirks mode, and the browser event life cycle across today's common browsers. You should also have strong Javascript programming with emphasis on jQuery and knowledge of development tools such as Firebug, yslow, the web developer toolbar, and Safari's developer support. Additional requirements include a bachelor's degree in a related field (Computer Science) and three or more years of work experience hand-coding efficient XHTML, CSS and JS for high-traffic websites. Lastly, experience with PHP 5, jQuery or other JS libraries, Drupal theming and Photoshop also required.
