Jim Moorhead

Former managing director of major public relations firm; former partner at Washington, DC law firm

Jim Moorhead is a senior counselor on APCO Worldwide’s International Advisory Council. He is a former managing director at a major public relations firm and is an experienced strategic advisor to Fortune 500 and other major companies facing challenging business, legal, regulatory and political settings. He helps organizations promote and protect their reputations with their key stakeholders.

His specialties include issues and crisis management and litigation communications, and he regularly helps organizations create and implement communications, thought leadership and public affairs programs. He also advises clients on their crisis preparedness activities, including vulnerability assessments, crisis plans and crisis simulations for critical scenarios.

His clients have included leading companies in the financial services, consumer products, retail and energy sectors.

Previously Jim was a partner at Steptoe & Johnson LLP, a global law firm, where he co-chaired the crisis management practice and chaired the class action practice during his 16-year tenure. In that role, he helped companies develop and execute coordinated business, legal and communications strategies to protect their reputations in the face of intense government, public and media scrutiny. He advised clients on forging effective responses to U.S. Department of Justice, Congressional and agency investigations and class action litigation and ensuing media coverage.

He speaks regularly on reputation and crisis management and is the author of The Instant Survivor: Right Ways to Respond When Things Go Wrong. He earned a J.D. from Columbia Law School and an A.B. in government from Harvard College.
